Therapy for High-Functioning Anxiety
When you seem capable on the outside but feel anxious and overwhelmed inside.
You may be someone others see as capable, dependable, and accomplished. You get things done, take care of responsibilities, and may rarely appear anxious to the people around you.
Yet inside, it can feel very different—constant thinking, anticipating what could go wrong, questioning whether you’ve done enough, or finding it difficult to truly relax.
High-functioning anxiety can be especially exhausting because life may look fine from the outside while your inner experience tells a very different story.
What Is High-Functioning Anxiety?
High-functioning anxiety is often used to describe anxiety that exists alongside a high level of functioning. You may continue to succeed at work, school, relationships, or daily responsibilities while privately carrying significant worry and tension.
You might notice:
Overthinking conversations, decisions, or possible outcomes
Difficulty slowing down, even when there is nothing urgent to do
Feeling responsible for anticipating problems or keeping things under control
Physical tension, restlessness, or difficulty settling
Doubting yourself despite evidence that you are capable
Feeling guilty or uneasy when you rest
Appearing calm while feeling overwhelmed inside
Sometimes the very strategies that help you function well can also make it difficult to recognize how much pressure you are carrying.
How Therapy Can Help
Therapy offers a space where you do not have to keep performing or holding everything together.
Rather than focusing only on making anxious thoughts go away, we can become curious about what is happening beneath the anxiety—what your mind and body may be anticipating, protecting against, or trying to manage.
Through therapy, you may begin to:
Recognize the emotional patterns underneath persistent worry
Notice anxiety in your body without immediately needing to control it
Develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself
Feel more comfortable with uncertainty and letting go of control
Make room for rest and connection without guilt
Experience greater internal steadiness, even when life remains demanding
How I Approach High-Functioning Anxiety
You may already know that you worry too much or put too much pressure on yourself. But intellectual understanding alone does not always change what happens inside.
My work is experiential and grounded in AEDP psychotherapy. Together, we pay attention to the emotions, body sensations, and relational patterns beneath the anxiety, while creating enough safety to experience them differently rather than simply managing or pushing them away.
Over time, therapy can help you feel less driven by anxiety and more connected to your own needs, feelings, and internal sense of safety.
Is This Familiar?
You may benefit from therapy for high-functioning anxiety if you often find yourself:
Functioning well while privately feeling overwhelmed
Replaying conversations or second-guessing decisions
Unable to fully relax after completing something
Feeling that there is always something else you should be doing
Taking care of others while overlooking your own needs
Knowing intellectually that things are okay while your body still feels on alert
Online therapy is available for adults in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Florida. Sessions are available in English or Japanese.
