What Is High-Functioning Anxiety?
High-functioning anxiety describes a pattern where your achievements and reliability are fueled not only by motivation but also by inner worry and pressure. On the outside, you may look accomplished and composed—yet inside, you might feel constant tension, self-doubt, or restlessness.
These patterns often show up as:
A persistent worry that you’re not doing enough
Difficulty slowing down or enjoying your successes
Physical symptoms such as tension, insomnia, or restlessness
A fear of failure that pushes you harder, even when you’re already stretched thin
The drive that brought you this far matters. But when it’s fueled by anxiety alone, it can feel exhausting to keep going at this pace while hiding the worry inside.
How Therapy Helps with High-Functioning Anxiety
Therapy provides a safe, supportive space to honor your strengths while easing the parts that feel overwhelming.
Together, we work to:
Recognize the patterns that fuel inner pressure and self-doubt
Learn tools to calm your body and regulate your nervous system
Build self-compassion in place of constant self-criticism
Reclaim rest, joy, and presence in your daily life
Strengthen resilience while continuing to pursue meaningful goals
My Approach
In working with high-functioning anxiety, I begin by acknowledging the motivation and reliability that have carried you this far. These strengths matter—and we want to preserve them. At the same time, we gently explore the fears and pressures that keep you on edge.
I draw from AEDP (formerly Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), an evidence-based, attachment- and emotion-focused approach. AEDP emphasizes safety, compassion, and experiential healing, making it especially effective in easing inner pressure and softening the self-criticism that fuels high-functioning anxiety.
Together, we also pay attention to how stress shows up in your body—tension, restlessness, or difficulty slowing down—and practice grounding and regulation strategies to help your nervous system find calm. Over time, the inner critic can give way to a steadier, more supportive voice, so your ambition remains a strength without leaving you depleted.
